1. What is Rate the PLATE?
Rate the PLATE is Australia's only national community based road and traffic surveillance system.
2. What is the purpose or primary objective of Rate the PLATE?
Rate the PLATE’s primary objective is to raise community's awareness of, and participation in, road safety issues by allowing road users to communicate with each other, expressing their opinions on road user behaviour and vehicle misuse by using a vehicle's number plate as a point of reference.
Please also refer to the legal section of our site.
3. What about my privacy and the privacy of my number plate?
For all intensive purposes a number plate is considered publicly accessible information. In the same way that you would see many number plates on unfamiliar vehicles driving around the streets on any given day, Rate the PLATE merely displays number plates and no further information revealing the owner or driver of associated vehicles. There is no way that the average citizen can identify an individual that they don’t know from a number plate, other than by the improper use of Government databases.

4. What about positive ratings and/or compliments?
We are building a dedicated feature to compliment other drivers, which is scheduled to be released shortly. Unfortunately, due to the nature of Australia’s current driver behaviour trends, the need to capture and action complaints is more pertinent to road safety.
5. What does Rate the PLATE do with the information it collects?
The data collected via the website is used to:
- Notify registered members and organisations about the opinion of a member in relation to alleged road user behaviour and/or vehicle misuse associated with a specific number plate.
- Compile detailed statistics on road user behaviour and traffic activity.
- Help identify road user trends, patterns, habits, and hot-spots.
- Compile history information on individual vehicles.
- Notify members about incidents involving their vehicles.
- Provide qualitative and quantitative information to registered organisations regarding observations directed towards their fleet of vehicles so that appropriate action can be taken within the organisation.
6. What is the background of Rate the PLATE?
Rate the PLATE was originally developed and launched in October 2006. Prior to its launch, Australian road users had no way of communicating important road safety issues with each other.
7. Who owns Rate the PLATE?
Rate the PLATE is owned and operated by Rate the Pty Ltd a registered Australian Company. ACN: 123 817 925. Please feel free to contact us.
8. How can I get involved?
You can join the thriving community instantly, register your plate(s) and start taking action towards road safety. We’ll notify you for free whenever your vehicle(s) are rated.
